Our wonderful market town of Melton Mowbray is full of history going back 1,000’s of years.

Melton Mowbray is famous for Fox Hunting and one of the historic ‘stories’ from the 1830s relates to the Marquis of Waterford and the expression “painting the town red” which came about when the Marquis, who was well known for his hooliganism, along with his friends caused havoc throughout the town painting buildings red.

Fox Hunting, as well as other sports such as horse racing, steeplechases and cock fighting attracted people from all sorts of classes including Royalty, Great Military Leaders, Prime Ministers, Poets, Artists & Socialites, Melton Mowbray has had them all over the years.
