For our March HistoryFare talk, we welcome John Manterfield who will present his talk “Grantham and the Second World War.”

John is the Chair of Grantham Civic Society  and actively involved in St Wulfram’s Church in Grantham.

Having undertaken research at Exeter University with a thesis on the Topographical Development of Grantham 1535-1835, John has published a chapter on Grantham in the later medieval period in The Making of Grantham.   He also edited Newton’s Grantham  – the Hall Book and life in a Puritan town  and two volumes for the Lincoln Record Society.  Borough Government in Newton’s Grantham- The Hall Book of Grantham 1649 -1662   & Borough Government in Restoration Grantham – The Hall Book of Grantham 1662-1704.

John’s talk will cover the inter-war history of Grantham with a brief overview of council housing and slum clearance,  preparations for war,  Grantham under attack,  scaling down, VE day and peace at last.

Talk starts at 8pm
