The Melton Mowbray Navigation tour looks at the history of Melton’s canal that was set up in 1791 by an Act of Parliament.

The Act gave the Melton Mowbray Navigation Company of Proprieters powers to “make the rivers Wreake and Eye navigable for the carriage of coal, stone, lime, limestone, timber, lead nd all kinds of merchandise”.

The idea behind Melton’s Canal or the Melton Mowbray Navigation to give it its proper name was conceived during the height of England’s canal building mania in the 1700’s.

Just as the 1790s had seen national enthusiasm for canals, the 1840s were to see the start of a national craze for railway-building and the Syston-Peterborough railway came through Melton in 1848.

The introduction of the railways slowly saw a reduction in canal traffic and the Melton Mowbray Navigation was officially closed by an Act of Abandonment in 1877.
