For our March talk, we take a look at some of the main units of the 1st Airborne and where they were billeted mainly focusing on the Melton Mowbray and Grantham areas.
At the end of 1943, after fighting in North Africa, Tuinisia, Sicily and Italy, the British 1st Airborne Division was withdrawn from the Mediterranean Theatre of Operations back to England to prepare, re-equip and train for operations including D-Day and Market Garden.
The units of the 1st Airborne set up their HQ’s and billets across Rutland, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire forming an Airborne corrider with the US 82nd Airborne Division and the US IXth AF Troop Carrier Command operating from airfields in the area.
